Today, on #InternationalDayForBiologicalDiversity, we celebrate the vital work to restore the longleaf pine ecosystem. 🌳 NFWF’s Longleaf Landscape Steward Fund provides grants to on-the-ground partners to safeguard these longleaf pine forests. These landscapes are essential strongholds of biodiversity in our Southern states, as they provide critical habitat for endangered and threatened species, including red-cockaded woodpecker, eastern indigo snake and gopher tortoise. 📷: Red-cockaded woodpecker, eastern indigo snake and gopher tortoise #biodiversity #wildlife #conservation #longleaf

Wildfires can be devastating for communities and wildlife, but some ecosystems need regular fire to thrive. Fire suppression is one of the reasons that longleaf pine, which once covered 90 million acres of the southeastern United States, has dwindled to approximately 5 percent of its historical range. For #WildfireAwarenessMonth, learn how NFWF and the Bezos Earth Fund are working to restore and maintain longleaf pine to benefit the species that rely on these fire-adapted forests and reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires through controlled burning. Together, we’re tackling two vital goals: boosting carbon storage and safeguarding this unique landscape, one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. #longleaf #longleafpine #forest #conservation #wildlife #climate

Happy #EndangeredSpeciesDay! Today and every day, NFWF champions endangered wildlife, from big to small… to very small. Protections for endangered species has helped to recover some of the United States’ most critically imperiled wildlife, including species like killer whales, California condor, and black-footed ferret. NFWF moves quickly to make time-sensitive investments to stem the loss of declining or endangered species. The southeastern United States is home to a stunning array of freshwater fish, mussels and crayfish. However, many species are at risk due to several factors, including land-use changes, habitat fragmentation and declines in water quality. Grants are available through the Southeast Aquatics Fund to restore habitats and improve water quality in targeted river basins and watersheds in the Southeast. Approximately $8.45 million is available in grant funding. Interested? Congrats to NFWF grantee Papahānaumokuākea Marine Debris Project, Inc for more than DOUBLING their goal of removing 15 tons of marine debris from the reefs and atolls of Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument in Hawai‘i. 👏👏👏 Check out the shear grit, sweat and persistence that goes into cleaning up this essential habitat for wildlife. 💪 We’re so impressed by the work that they do! 📷: Marine technicians clear ghost nets and other marine debris from Papahānaumokuākea. Did you know that wetlands are one of the most productive and biodiverse habitats in the world? Although they only make up 6 percent of the Earth’s land surface, wetlands provide habitat or breeding areas for approximately 40 percent of all plant and animal species, including around half of all federally listed species in the U.S., like the roseate spoonbill. At NFWF, we work every day to protect these critically important ecosystems. Healthier wetlands contribute to enhanced biodiversity, mitigate negative climate impacts, remove pollutants from waterways, and improve local economies! Happy Arbor Day! 🌳 Trees give us so much: they purify our air, filter water, and contribute to the overall health of our ecosystems. They even give wildlife much needed space to hang out. 📷: Fisher, red morph screech owl, and young black bear hanging out in trees #arborday #treeplanting #conservation #trees #climate #wildlife

NFWF and NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration will award approximately $6 million in grants to remove damaging marine debris from coastal areas of communities impacted by hurricanes Fiona, Ian and Nicole, and Typhoon Merbok. Severe storms such as these can cause significant harm to communities, industry and tourism, and species of fish and wildlife. Interested in applying?
