Today, on #InternationalDayForBiologicalDiversity, we celebrate the vital work to restore the longleaf pine ecosystem. 🌳 NFWF’s Longleaf Landscape Steward Fund provides grants to on-the-ground partners to safeguard these longleaf pine forests. Wildfires can be devastating for communities and wildlife, but some ecosystems need regular fire to thrive. Fire suppression is one of the reasons that longleaf pine, which once covered 90 million acres of the southeastern United States, has dwindled to approximately 5 percent of its historical range. For #WildfireAwarenessMonth, learn how NFWF and the Bezos Earth Fund are working to restore and maintain longleaf pine to benefit the species that rely on these fire-adapted forests and reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires through controlled burning. The southeastern United States is home to a stunning array of freshwater fish, mussels and crayfish. However, many species are at risk due to several factors, including land-use changes, habitat fragmentation and declines in water quality. Grants are available through the Southeast Aquatics Fund to restore habitats and improve water quality in targeted river basins and watersheds in the Southeast. Approximately $8.45 million is available in grant funding. Interested? Did you know that wetlands are one of the most productive and biodiverse habitats in the world? Although they only make up 6 percent of the Earth’s land surface, wetlands provide habitat or breeding areas for approximately 40 percent of all plant and animal species, including around half of all federally listed species in the U.S., like the roseate spoonbill. At NFWF, we work every day to protect these critically important ecosystems.
